Pourquoi opter pour des bougies en cire végétale vs paraffine ?

Why choose vegetable wax vs. paraffin candles?

At Belaia we care about ecology and the environment. This is why we offer eco-responsible scented candles and fragrance diffusers. Unlike paraffin candles, which come from petroleum and release toxic substances, our candles are made from organic vegetable wax, comprising 80% rapeseed wax and 20% coconut wax.

Our natural perfumes, developed in Grasse, and our 100% lead-free cotton wicks guarantee a healthy and pleasant olfactory experience. In addition, our reusable glass jars reinforce our zero waste commitment.

Want a scented candle but you don't know the difference between a paraffin candle and a vegetable wax candle? Belaia enlightens you!

In the current context it is important to care about ecology and the environment also in everyday actions. This is why (among others) Belaia offers you eco-responsible scented candles and perfume diffusers.

But then, what differentiates Belaia candles from paraffin candles?

Let's start with paraffin candles:

Little cultural point: Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum transformed into wax.

They are more commonly called “industrial scented candles”, because they are not made from natural products that are respectful of the environment and our health.

Indeed, these candles tend to degrade indoor air quality by releasing toxic and carcinogenic substances when burned; such as acetone, benzene, and toluene. These substances can cause allergies, asthma and skin reactions. Moreover, certain substances, such as benzene, are even released into the air when the candle is at rest (i.e. it is not heating).

The wax

Then, when burning, the paraffin wax combined with synthetic perfumes releases a lot of soot; which can cause asthma, heart attacks and breathing problems.

The perfumes

Still on the side of synthetic perfumes, their combustion, combined with that of synthetic dyes, generates emissions of limonene, alcohol and formaldehyde; substances causing headaches, allergies, dizziness, as well as respiratory tract infections.

The wick

Now let's talk about highlights. Generally, industrial scented candles, in addition to being made of paraffin wax, have wicks with a metal core. However, these metal core wicks still release a small quantity of heavy metals (i.e. lead) when burning.

The making

Finally, apart from health risks, from an ecological point of view, paraffin candles are not in first position either. Indeed, paraffin being a by-product of oil, and oil being a very non-renewable resource, it is not at all ecological!

However, although paraffin candles are very harmful to your health as well as that of the environment, they still have some advantages! In fact, they are less expensive to produce and therefore to purchase.

But at what cost! Isn't it better to invest a few extra euros in a candle that smells good and does good?

So let's talk about vegetable wax candles, THE solution for an interior that smells good in complete safety!

But then, how do you choose the right vegetable wax candle?

The important thing is to check the following criteria:

The wax

First of all, the candle must be made from 100% organic vegetable wax (such as coconut wax, soy wax, rapeseed wax); while avoiding choosing candles made with beeswax because their production overexploits the bees (we don’t want that either!).

The perfumes

Then, in terms of perfumes, the candle must be composed of natural perfumes not containing CMR substances (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic and Toxic for reproduction) or phthalates; while avoiding candles scented with essential oils which can release CMR substances when heated.

The container

For the container, if you want a 0 waste option, the only way is to choose a candle without a pot, but this reduces its practicality and aesthetics. The fallback solution for more ecological candles would therefore be glass jars, which can be reused.

The wick

Regarding the wick, so that your candle does not release any heavy metals into the air, we said that you should avoid wicks with a metal support, and prefer cotton or paper cores that are much less harmful.

The making

Finally, for ethical reasons, it is appropriate to favor artisanal candles made and produced in France, which guarantees the ethical side of the object, as well as superior know-how and quality compared to industrial candles.

Here you go! Now you know everything.

But then, do Belaia candles meet these criteria?

It seems that yes.

The wax

Indeed, Belaia candles are made from 100% organic vegetable wax, including 80% rapeseed wax and 20% coconut wax.

The perfumes

Then, our brand offers a range of 6 flavors (the classics: vanilla, monoï, tuberose, but also the signatures: hot sand, blueberry tea, burnt paper) developed in Grasse from natural ingredients.

The container

Our candles are contained in reusable and recyclable glass jars, which can be refilled (candle refills sold on the site) or transformed into perfume diffusers and other design objects; which reinforces the eco-responsible aspect while limiting waste.

The wick

As for the wicks, they are made of 100% cotton guaranteed to be lead-free (therefore free of heavy metals!).

The making

Finally, our products are guaranteed to be artisanal, designed and manufactured in France. But also eco-responsible, sustainable, natural, and respectful of animals and the environment, thanks to 100% vegan candles.
